As Bill Shaddock’s vision to help Baylor Law School improve its national reputation for business and transitional law, The Closer Competition is now in its ninth year. In that time, it has become a prominent and pre-eminent transactional law competition. The Closer 2025, held January 16-January 19, 2025, was reported by all to have been another resounding success.
In addition to providing the seed fund, The Bill Shaddock Companies and the Kim & Bill Shaddock Fund for Business and Entrepreneurial Initiatives continues to support the growth of this very successful initiative.
The competition scenario this year called on the competitors to negotiate a fictional long-term concession agreement between the City of Waco and Schmaltz’s Sandwich Shoppe pursuant to which Schmaltz’s would renovate and operate two cafes located in Cameron Park Zoo. With only 24 hours to prepare, the competitors had to sift through their senior partner’s file of emails, phone notes, research, and drafts to be ready to address the issues revealed by the redline draft agreement in the file. On Friday, the competitors and coaches were taken to visit the Zoo where they received a special tour and behind-the-scenes insight and were provided with Schmaltz’s sandwiches for lunch.
